UAE Grounds All Iranian Airline Services Amid US Sanctions Pressure

The United Arab Emirates’ General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) moved swiftly on 24 September to halt every passenger and cargo flight operated by Iranian carriers to and from the country. The blanket suspension, announced only hours after Washington’s 23 September deadline for tighter secondary sanctions on Iranian aviation took effect, is effective immediately and remains in force “until further notice”. The GCAA said the directive is a direct response to the new US restrictions, which prohibit service providers worldwide from handling aircraft owned, leased or wet-leased by Iranian airlines. Although the UAE has imposed targeted aviation curbs on Iran in the past, this is the first time since the current Gulf crisis began that all Iranian carriers have been barred. The decision covers scheduled passenger services to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah as well as ad-hoc charter and belly-hold cargo operations, effectively closing one of Iran’s most important commercial gateways. For businesses, the impact is immediate. Iranian residents working in the UAE—estimated at more than 100,000—must now rely on non-Iranian airlines or circuitous routings through Muscat, Doha or Istanbul, adding cost and uncertainty to essential travel. Cargo flows will also be disrupted; Emirates SkyCargo moved roughly 6 per cent of Iran-bound air freight in 2025, volume that will have to be re-routed or shifted to sea freight. Travel-management companies are advising corporate travellers to review itineraries for the next 30 days and build in additional connection time through third-country hubs. There are broader geopolitical ramifications. The UAE is one of Iran’s top trading partners, and aviation connectivity has long been a back-channel for humanitarian supplies and business ties even during diplomatic downturns. By aligning with the US ban, Abu Dhabi signals it is prepared to absorb commercial pain to maintain strategic relations with Washington. Analysts note the suspension could accelerate negotiations already under way to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to unhindered shipping; Iran may seek aviation concessions in exchange for maritime de-escalation. Travellers already in the UAE can remain on valid visas, but those planning trips should monitor official channels. The GCAA stresses that updates will be issued only through approved sources. Companies with regional mobility programmes should brief assignees and reconsider contingency plans, including possible use of emergent hubs in Oman or Saudi Arabia should the suspension be prolonged.
