India’s flag-carrier Air India and Dubai-based low-cost airline flydubai have sealed a two-way interline and special-prorate agreement that will allow seamless ticketing and baggage through-check on more than 120 combined routes. Announced late on 24 September, the pact opens 52 new one-stop options for Air India customers transiting Dubai onto flydubai’s network in Europe, the CIS, Africa and the Middle East, while giving flydubai passengers access to 69 Air India destinations across India, Southeast Asia and beyond through Delhi and Mumbai. For corporate travel managers the tie-up is significant. It plugs long-standing white spots—such as secondary African capitals and emerging Central Asian markets—into the India–Gulf corporate travel corridor, shortening journey times by up to six hours compared with current multi-stop routings. Travel-policy teams should update global distribution systems to reflect the new AI-FZ fare classes, which will roll out in global GDSs from 1 October. Strategically, the partnership strengthens Dubai’s positioning as a South Asia super-connector, complementing Emirates’ long-haul reach and reinforcing the emirate’s ambition to handle 100 million passengers by 2030. For Air India, now under Tata Group ownership, the deal expands its post-privatisation international footprint without committing scarce long-haul aircraft. flydubai benefits from feed into its growing European and Caucasus portfolio just ahead of the peak winter season. Passengers will enjoy single-ticket itineraries, through-tagged baggage and coordinated minimum-connecting-times at Dubai International’s Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Both carriers say they are working toward reciprocal frequent-flyer accrual and a potential codeshare in 2027 subject to regulatory approvals. Businesses with assignees shuttling between India and the UAE should revisit preferred-carrier contracts: the interline could offer cost-effective options compared with legacy full-service carriers, especially in premium-economy cabins recently introduced by Air India on refurbished 787s.
