Irish Ferries introduces mandatory passport checks on Ireland–Britain routes from 28 September

Business travellers heading for Britain by sea now need to pack more than their laptop. From Monday, 28 September, Irish Ferries—and, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), most other operators—require every passenger, irrespective of age or nationality, to present a **valid Irish passport or passport card** before boarding services between Dublin or Rosslare and Welsh ports. Airline-style photo ID cards, driving licences and expired passports will no longer be accepted. The tightening follows new UK Border Force data-accuracy requirements that oblige carriers to transmit verified passport information in advance of sailing. Ferry companies have warned that anyone arriving at check-in without the correct document will be refused travel and advised to rebook. The DFA travel advisory for Great Britain, updated this week, highlights the change and urges Irish citizens to check passport validity well ahead of trips—even short-notice consulting gigs or day returns for client meetings. Airlines introduced a similar rule in February. For mobility and travel managers the operational impact is immediate: employee profiles and booking tools must capture passport details at the time of reservation, and corporate policies should clarify that the cost of last-minute passport renewals or missed sailings sits with the traveller. Organisations running “weekly commuter” models between Dublin tech hubs and UK client sites should factor potential passport lapses into project timelines. The move also signals a gradual hardening of CTA travel formalities in the post-Brexit environment. While Irish citizens remain exempt from the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, failure to carry an Irish passport will leave them unable to prove that exemption—and therefore denied boarding. Employers should update induction material for new hires, especially EU nationals who may assume that land journeys via ferry are lower-risk than flights. Looking ahead, carriers say compliance audits will become more frequent and that automated e-gate trials could extend to major ferry terminals. Companies with significant cross-Channel movements may wish to negotiate service-level agreements with ferry operators covering manifest uploads and contingency sailings for mission-critical staff.
