Storm paralyses Catalonia’s rail network and grounds hundreds of flights at Barcelona El Prat
A violent Atlantic squall that swept across north-eastern Spain on 4 October knocked out critical transport arteries just as the working week was set to begin. Overnight flooding and fallen trees forced Renfe to suspend all Rodalies commuter services around Barcelona and halted the AVE high-speed line between Barcelona-Sants and Madrid until midday. Engineering teams from Adif carried out ‘marchas de exploración’—driver-only test runs of empty trains—before gradually re-opening the route, but services toward Figueres and the French border remained closed. Air travel fared little better. Airport operator Aena confirmed 385 flight cancellations and more than 150 significant delays at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Low-cost carrier Vueling offered fee-free rebooking for all customers booked out of BCN before 15:00 on Sunday, while British Airways and Lufthansa invoked weather waivers for the rest of the day. El Prat’s apron was briefly shut when wind gusts exceeded 80 km/h, compounding staffing shortages as security personnel struggled to reach the airport by road. The disruption rippled across Spain’s interconnected travel network. Business travellers rerouted through Madrid-Barajas found last-minute fares spiking 240 %, and ferry companies running between Barcelona and Palma warned that onward connections in the Balearics would miss scheduled trucking slots. The Generalitat’s civil-protection agency advised residents to avoid all non-essential movement, an unusual step in Europe’s third-largest car-sharing market. Logistics managers reacted by activating contingency plans—diverting freight to Tarragona’s port and arranging emergency road haulage. One multinational electronics firm with just-in-time supplies for a factory in Martorell chartered seven lorries to replace a cancelled overnight freight train. Travel managers, meanwhile, scrambled to re-book Monday-morning meetings virtually, underscoring how extreme weather is becoming a core consideration for corporate mobility policies in Spain. Meteorologists at AEMET expect the cut-off low (DANA) to drift east on Monday, but rail infrastructure experts warn that saturated embankments could keep speed restrictions in place for days. With UN climate-risk audits now mandatory for many listed companies, Sunday’s storm adds urgency to calls for resilient, multimodal transport planning in Iberia’s main business corridor.
