Brussels metro, tram and bus network cut to skeleton service for strike day
The Brussels public-transport operator STIB-MIVB has published its service plan for the national strike of Friday 9 October—and it reads like a timetable for a Sunday night. In an update released on 8 October, STIB confirmed that only two metro lines (1 and 5), six tram lines and a limited set of bus routes will run, all at reduced frequency. Night buses (Noctis) are cancelled outright, and every ticket office except four downtown kiosks will be closed. The strike forms part of a broader labour mobilisation over wage indexation and pension reform, backed by Belgium’s three main trade-union federations. Although the action is not directed specifically at STIB, the operator’s staff enjoy the legal right to join a national strike, and management is legally barred from assigning replacement workers. The result is a predictable near-shutdown that will complicate the commutes of some 400,000 daily users—many of them cross-border workers and EU officials who rely on metro lines linking the European Quarter, NATO and Brussels Airport. Business travellers arriving at Brussels Airport or Brussels-South Charleroi Airport should therefore expect overloaded taxi ranks and rideshare surges. Employers that provide shuttle buses to offices in the capital are adding extra departures, while several conference organisers have postponed events scheduled for Friday, citing the “severe uncertainty” over last-mile mobility. STIB says real-time service information will be posted from 06:00 on strike day via its website, mobile app, WhatsApp channel and social-media feeds. The company’s call centre will also open early to field queries. Travellers are advised to download the STIB app in advance and to consider combining metro segments with shared e-scooters or bikes, which historically remain available during strikes. With another public-sector protest due on Monday 12 October, mobility managers are bracing for continued disruption. The lesson: never assume that intra-city connections in Brussels will be immune to national-level labour disputes, and always maintain an updated list of alternative ground-transport options for assignees and visiting executives.
