Germany maintains Czech border checks through mid-March 2027
Germany has confirmed that it will continue temporary controls along all its land borders—including the 815-kilometre frontier with the Czech Republic—until at least 15 March 2027. The decision, published in the European Commission’s latest Schengen notification list, extends measures first re-introduced on 16 September 2026 in response to sustained levels of irregular migration and people-smuggling networks operating on the so-called Balkan route. For Czech manufacturers that export heavily to Bavaria and Saxony, the extension could translate into sporadic delays at crossings such as Rozvadov/Waidhaus on the D5/A6 corridor. Freight forwarders report that the mean delay per truck has fallen below ten minutes since automated risk-profiling lanes were installed, but “random intensive checks” can still hold vehicles for up to an hour when trafficking suspects are sought. Czech citizens travelling for business or leisure should keep passports or national IDs at hand and allow extra time, particularly at peak times on Fridays and Sundays. Rail passengers on the Prague–Dresden line have so far experienced only on-board ID checks with minimal disruption. Berlin insists the controls remain a last-resort measure under Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code and says it shares daily risk assessments with Prague to minimise trade friction. Nonetheless, the Czech Chamber of Commerce warns that even short delays can add costs for “just-in-time” supply chains serving the German automotive industry. Legal analysts note that Germany is approaching the two-year cumulative limit for Article 25 measures; if the threat persists beyond March 2027, Berlin would need to invoke Article 29 or seek a special Council recommendation—steps that could open political debate on Schengen governance.
