Delta Issues Change-Fee Waiver for Asia Routes as Super Typhoon Champi Nears
Delta Air Lines on Wednesday published an exception policy giving customers flexibility to rebook travel to, from or through Taipei (TPE) and Shanghai Pudong (PVG) as Super Typhoon Champi barrels toward East Asia. The bulletin, issued at 12:00 p.m. ET on October 21, waives change fees and basic-fare cancellation charges for tickets issued on or before the same day, covering travel between October 22 and 24. Under the waiver, passengers may reschedule in the same cabin for new travel that begins no later than October 27 without paying a fare difference, provided the origin and destination remain the same. Travel agents have been instructed to insert specific waiver codes—A3Q2P for cabin-to-cabin changes and U4G3R for fee waivers—into ticket designators or tour-code fields. Although the storm is thousands of miles from the continental United States, the policy matters for U.S.-based multinationals with regional hubs in Taiwan and mainland China. Corporate travel managers have already begun rerouting employees through Seoul and Hong Kong, while some technology companies are shifting in-person supplier audits to virtual formats to avoid stranding staff overseas. Delta’s quick move also signals how U.S. carriers are fine-tuning disruption protocols after a record typhoon season last year. By locking in reissue dates and waiver documentation requirements, the airline limits manual interventions by call centers—an operational pain point spotlighted during Typhoon Doksuri in 2025. Business travelers should still watch for knock-on effects, because partner airlines Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Korean Air apply their own policies that may not fully align with Delta’s. Travel risk advisers recommend that companies activate their traveler-tracking tools and remind employees on the ground to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so they can receive consular alerts if airport closures widen.
