The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) has published its latest snapshot of employment-permit processing dates and, for the first time in several months, the figures show a measurable reduction in backlogs. According to the update, released on 23 October 2026, brand-new Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications are now being examined just seven days after submission (16 October 2026), while new Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) permits are at three days (20 October 2026). General Employment Permit (GEP) applications, which cover medium-skill roles outside the State’s shortage list, are still running at just over a month (applications received 20 September 2026 are now in processing). All other new permit types are being assessed on applications lodged 31 August 2026, and renewals and appeals remain backed up to early August and late April respectively. DETE officials say the quicker turnaround on CSEP and ICT files reflects two developments: first, an extra cohort of case officers that joined the Employment Permits Section in September; second, the first phase of a new AI-supported triage tool that automatically flags complete applications with no compliance issues for expedited review. The department confirmed that the tool will be rolled out across all permit categories by the end of Q1 2027, which should "halve average processing times across the board" according to an internal memo shared with stakeholders last week. For multinationals and Irish employers alike, the shorter queues are a welcome relief at the start of peak budgeting season. Global mobility managers can expect to secure start dates for newly hired non-EEA specialists within four to six weeks instead of the 10-to-12-week wait that was common earlier in 2026. DETE reiterated, however, that incomplete documentation remains the single biggest cause of delay, responsible for 38 percent of all CSEP queries raised in September. Practical tip: employers filing CSEP or ICT applications should ensure they use the updated application checklist released on 1 October 2026 and upload police-clearance certificates as separate PDF files, as the new triage tool cannot read embedded images within merged documents.
