Brussels Mayors Demand Action on Noisy Flight Path Over Northern Capital
The mayors of Koekelberg, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Schaerbeek united on 29 December to condemn the “intensive” use of runway 07L at Brussels Airport, claiming that redirected take-offs are subjecting 450,000 residents to unacceptable aircraft noise. Their joint statement backs a citizen petition—already signed by 1,600 people—calling on Federal Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke to end the emergency routing introduced during runway-maintenance work.

Runway 07L points due east, sending departing jets directly over some of Brussels’ most densely populated neighbourhoods. Airlines argue the temporary route is needed to maintain punctuality during winter works, while the airport operator says safety and prevailing winds leave few alternatives. Yet local officials warn that prolonged overflights are eroding quality of life and undermining efforts to keep the capital attractive for expatriate talent.

From a global-mobility perspective, the dispute highlights the competing pressures of aviation capacity and urban liveability. Multinational firms headquartered in northern Brussels already struggle to attract staff because of housing shortages; persistent noise could accelerate commuter fatigue and prompt relocation talks. Real-estate advisors say properties beneath the flight path have seen viewings fall 15 % since October.

The mayors are asking the federal government to publish noise-monitoring data in real time and to reinstate the pre-works alternation scheme by 15 January. If no action is taken, they plan to file an injunction with the Council of State. Employers with offices in the affected districts should anticipate potential protests and consider flexible start times or remote-working days during peak-noise windows.
