Alberta Issues 1,051 Invitations Across Four AAIP Draws, Prioritising Health-Care, Tech and Rural Candidates

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that Alberta’s Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) conducted four provincial nomination draws between 1 and 13 May, inviting 1,051 candidates to take the next step toward Canadian permanent residence. The results, released 24 May, show that the province continues to lean on its Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) to meet urgent labour-market gaps, issuing 832 of the month’s invitations to candidates already working in Alberta in occupations ranging from construction trades to advanced manufacturing. The remaining invitations targeted highly specific talent pools. Under the province’s Accelerated Tech Pathway—a fast-track option aligned with Express Entry—146 software engineers, data scientists and other digital professionals received Notices of Interest. A further 61 health-care practitioners were selected through the Dedicated Health-Care Pathway, while 12 invitations went to newcomers prepared to settle in small communities through the Rural Renewal Stream. May’s rounds pushed Alberta’s 2026 nomination tally to 6,269—more than one-third of the 18,000 allocations Ottawa has set aside for the province this calendar year. Provincial data show that 63 percent of all Expressions of Interest (EOIs) waiting in the AAIP pool belong to the Opportunity Stream, underscoring employers’ continued reliance on the pathway to convert temporary foreign workers to permanent residents. For employers, the numbers are encouraging: Alberta still has 4,212 unused nominations for 2026, meaning companies can continue to leverage the AAIP to retain in-demand staff well into the second half of the year. Candidates should note that the lowest observed score in May was 50 under the Rural Renewal Stream, but cut-offs for tech and AOS selections remained in the mid-50s—a clear signal that arranged employment and Alberta work experience remain decisive advantages. Practically, HR teams should audit expiring work permits now: where workers satisfy AOS criteria, filing an EOI before the next draw could secure their status. Tech employers should consider the Accelerated Tech Pathway’s service standard—often under two months from invitation to nomination—when planning onboarding timelines for global hires.
