Hong Kong Airport Poised to Surpass 70 Million Passengers in 2026, Boosting the City’s Global Connectivity
Speaking at a transport-industry forum on 14 June, lawmaker and Airport Authority Board member Ann Chiang stated that passenger throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is on track to exceed 70 million this year—a 13 percent increase over the first four months compared with the same period in 2025. The figure would mark HKIA’s strongest recovery since the pandemic and edge it closer to its pre-COVID record of 74.7 million passengers in 2019.

For international employees and leisure travellers alike, visa paperwork remains a key part of trip planning. VisaHQ’s Hong Kong platform (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) offers rapid online processing for dozens of destinations, helping HR teams and individual flyers obtain the right travel documents without delay—an especially useful service as flights fill up faster and lead times shrink.

Chiang credited the acceleration to the full commissioning of HKIA’s three-runway system, which now supports up to 77 aircraft movements per hour, and to the gradual reopening of Mainland China’s group-tour market. She added that the HZMB has become a game-changer for hub development, funnelling over 12 percent of HKIA’s arriving passengers from western Guangdong and Macao directly into the air-side “Sea-to-Air” transfer zone. For global mobility professionals, the surge signals shorter lead times for relocating staff and greater seat availability on regional trunk routes. Cathay Pacific has already announced a 9 percent capacity increase for its Hong Kong–London and Hong Kong–San Francisco services for the August peak, while Singapore Airlines will up-gauge two daily flights to Airbus A350-1000s. Cargo operators also benefit: DHL Express plans to add a fifth nightly freighter rotation to Central Europe, citing stronger demand for time-definite e-commerce shipments. Nevertheless, Chiang acknowledged stresses on supporting infrastructure. The Immigration Department is recruiting an extra 300 officers to man arrival halls during late-evening peaks, and Airport Authority engineers are trialling biometric e-gates able to clear a passenger in six seconds. Meanwhile, hotel developers have revived pipeline projects near Tung Chung, adding 2,300 new rooms by 2028, which should ease accommodation shortages for short-term assignees. Corporations with sizable expatriate populations view HKIA’s rebound as a welcome confirmation of Hong Kong’s role as an aviation and logistics nexus. Mobility managers are advised to lock in summer travel well in advance and to monitor ongoing e-gate trials that could further streamline crew and frequent-traveller processing.
