‘Permitted Paid Engagement’ visa scrapped: Standard Visitor route now covers short-term paid work
The Home Office’s long-trailed simplification of the UK Visitor regime went live on 15 July 2026, folding the niche Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visa into the mainstream Standard Visitor category. Under the revised rules, professionals such as lecturers, artists, sportspeople, expert witnesses and airline examiners can now undertake pre-arranged paid assignments of up to 30 days without a separate visa type. Visitors must still secure entry clearance if they are ‘visa nationals’, but non-visa nationals may notify the PPE activity on arrival. Crucially, the engagement must be declared in the visa application or on the UK ETA/eGate landing form and supported by a formal written invitation from the UK host. Payment from a UK source remains tightly restricted outside the listed exceptions and infringement could jeopardise future Skilled Worker or Global Business Mobility applications. For employers, the change offers welcome flexibility: conferences can engage foreign keynote speakers at short notice, and UK subsidiaries can invite overseas specialists for ad-hoc consultancy without triggering the Sponsor Licence obligations inherent in the Skilled Worker route. HR should, however, diarise the 30-day clock—over-runs will breach visitor conditions even though the visa itself is valid for six months. Compliance teams are advised to update invitation letter templates and traveller check-lists. Border Force officers retain discretion to refuse entry if they doubt that the engagement was arranged in advance or is commensurate with the visitor’s overseas occupation. Companies should therefore brief visitors to carry proof of employment abroad, return travel tickets and evidence of the engagement’s timetable.
