Germany’s summer-holiday rush is set for major disruption after the public-sector union Verdi announced a 24-hour “warning strike” covering Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin-Brandenburg and eight other international airports from 00:00 on Monday. Around 23,000 ground-handling, security-screening and check-in employees are expected to walk out, halting departures and severely curtailing arrivals. Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport has already told passengers not to travel to the airport, warning that none of the roughly 1,200 planned departures will take off. Munich, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hannover, Bremen, Hamburg and Leipzig/Halle anticipate similar shutdowns. The German Airports Association (ADV) calculates that more than 150,000 travellers and some 2,000 flights scheduled for the day will be affected, with knock-on delays likely to ripple through the European network for much of the week. Verdi is pressing for an 8 % across-the-board pay rise, higher shift bonuses and three extra days of annual leave for the 2.5 million workers covered by the federal and municipal public-sector contract. After three inconclusive rounds of talks, the union has escalated pressure ahead of formal wage arbitration next week. Employers argue the claims would add billions of euro to municipal payrolls and threaten airport competitiveness. Business-travel managers are urging companies to activate contingency plans such as re-routing via neighbouring hubs, switching to rail on domestic routes or approving remote participation for Monday meetings. Lufthansa and other carriers will operate minimal “skeleton” schedules using non-German crews where feasible and have relaxed rebooking rules. Although the work stoppage is limited to 24 hours, analysts note that Verdi has a history of staging rolling actions until a framework deal is reached. With school holidays under way in six federal states and outbound traffic at post-pandemic highs, multinational firms face productivity hits and additional duty-of-care obligations to stranded staff. Travel-risk advisers recommend monitoring airline channels closely and reminding employees that EU261 compensation does not apply to strikes by airport staff rather than by the airline itself.
