Dubai’s GDRFA launches streamlined e-service for one-year Virtual Work Residence Permit
Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency & Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) quietly deployed an upgraded online interface for its Virtual Work Residence Permit on 23 July, making it easier for remote employees of non-UAE companies to secure a one-year stay. The service, nested under ‘Issuance of residency without work permission’, now walks applicants through document uploads, fee payment (AED 200 plus AED 20 delivery) and Emirates ID generation in as little as 48 hours. Key clarifications include the minimum income threshold—fixed at US $3,500 per month—and a standardised list of compulsory uploads (passport, health insurance, medical fitness, salary certificate and proof of remote employment). The guidance also confirms a 60-day grace period after permit expiry, aligning it with other non-work residency categories. For global-mobility teams the timing is significant: summer is peak season for ‘work-from-Dubai’ requests by European staff, and talent departments often struggle with divergent rules across emirates. The new portal provides a single English-language reference point plus a direct API hook for licensed visa agents, cutting paperwork loops. Tax advisers, however, caution that holding a Virtual Work Permit does not by itself create UAE tax residency; assignees may still owe home-country income tax unless they also obtain a Tax Residency Certificate and sever primary ties. HR should therefore pair the smoother immigration path with proper fiscal briefing.
