The Transportation Security Administration quietly launched the most passenger-friendly tweak to U.S. airport rules since PreCheck itself. Under the “Gateside by TSA PreCheck” pilot, members can now clear security at 13 airports even if they are not flying that day — perfect for meeting an unaccompanied minor at the gate, dining with a client during a long layover, or scouting retail space for an airport concession. The program, confirmed by TSA spokesman Dan Velez to local station KUTV and detailed in Men’s Journal on September 18, extends the existing visitor-pass concepts some hubs have tested, but layers in PreCheck’s identity-verification and threat-assessment vetting to keep the risk profile low. Eligible customers must still apply online in advance, undergo the same pre-travel watch-list checks that underpin PreCheck boarding-pass benefits, and present a REAL ID-compliant credential at the checkpoint. Once approved, they receive a digital “G” pass that functions like a boarding pass. For concessionaires and corporate facility managers, Gateside unlocks easier site visits behind security and could spur new meeting-space concepts on the sterile side of the airport. TSA is simultaneously evaluating an even bigger convenience: allowing PreCheck members to carry full water bottles through lanes equipped with next-generation computed-tomography (CT) scanners. Senior officials told CBS News the trial would start at select CT-equipped airports later this year. If successful, that could mark the beginning of the end for the 3-1-1 liquid rule that has complicated business travel for two decades, although broader liquid limits would remain in force for non-PreCheck passengers. From a mobility-policy standpoint, companies may soon need to update internal travel guides: visiting executives could schedule gate-side meetings without purchasing refundable tickets, and compliance teams must remind staff that Gateside passes are still subject to TSA security rules and random screening. Airport operators, meanwhile, will have to weigh increased foot traffic against capacity constraints and concession revenue opportunities. The pilot’s success metrics — wait-time impacts, security-incidence rates and passenger-satisfaction scores — will determine whether Gateside becomes a national PreCheck perk in 2027. For now, road-warriors and mobility managers should keep an eye on participating airports and encourage eligible employees to enroll early if the service aligns with their travel patterns.
