Austria–Italy rail link via Tarvisio remains closed; replacement buses extended to 20 September

International rail passengers travelling between Austria and north-eastern Italy continue to face detours after Italian infrastructure manager RFI confirmed that engineering works on the Pontebbana line will overrun until 20 September. The closure affects the 58-kilometre stretch between Tarvisio Boscoverde, just south of the Austrian border, and Carnia in Friuli. All ÖBB/Trenitalia EuroCity and regional services are being replaced by buses, adding around 80 minutes to the Vienna–Udine journey and complicating flight connections from Venice. The works are part of a €420 million modernisation package that includes tunnel lining, new overhead electrification and the installation of ETCS Level 2 signalling. While the long-term goal is to raise line speed from 110 km/h to 140 km/h and boost freight capacity, the timing is awkward: it coincides with the MotoGP round at the Red Bull Ring and the peak season for alpine cycling tourism on the Alpe-Adria trail. ÖBB is automatically honouring rail tickets on the bus shuttles and advising travellers with tight onward schedules to consider rerouting via Villach–Salzburg–Brenner or to fly into Trieste rather than Venice. Business travellers heading to industrial hubs in Udine and Pordenone should budget for additional taxi costs because replacement coaches stop at roadside car parks rather than station forecourts. The disruption also impacts logistics: rail-freight operators have diverted intermodal services to the Tauern axis, squeezing already limited capacity through the Alpine tunnels. Freight forwarders report surcharges of up to €90 per container for time-critical goods. RFI says normal train operations will resume with EC 1821 departing Tarvisio Boscoverde at 05:52 on 21 September, although a final inspection by the Italian national safety authority is still pending. Travellers booked on 21 September departures should monitor ÖBB’s real-time app for possible residual delays.
