A viral social-media post has thrust an old but often-overlooked rule back into the spotlight: Indian passport holders transiting through the United Kingdom generally need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) even when they hold a valid Schengen visa and remain in the airport’s international zone. Travel portal NDTV Travel picked up the story on 20 September after a Delhi-to-London-to-Oslo passenger was refused boarding by British Airways staff at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The incident underscores the fact that UK immigration policy sits outside the Schengen framework. While a Schengen Type C visa permits onward travel within 27 European countries, it offers no automatic right to transit British airports. Nationals of “visa-national” countries—including India, Pakistan and Nigeria—must secure a DATV in advance unless they qualify for limited exemptions such as a valid US visa or permanent-resident card. For business travellers, the consequence can be costly: same-day rebooking fees, missed client meetings and potential visa refusals if airlines mark the passenger as a “no-show.” Travel-management companies (TMCs) report a spike in last-minute itinerary changes as Indian corporates resume multi-stop European trips post-pandemic. According to BCD Travel’s Delhi office, nearly eight percent of European routings they audit still involve an inadvertent London connection. The UK Home Office aims to process DATV applications within 15 working days, but applicants frequently encounter longer waits at VFS Global centres, particularly during the September conference season. Mobility managers are advised to flag the requirement at the planning stage and, where possible, route employees through Schengen-area hubs such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris to avoid UK transit formalities. Tip for travellers: use the UK government’s online visa checker and apply for the DATV at least four weeks before departure; carry printed evidence of your onward booking and destination visa to facilitate airline document checks at Indian departure airports.
