The Civil Aviation Administration of China’s Belt-and-Road ‘Air Silk Road’ bulletin confirms that China Southern Airlines will inaugurate a Guangzhou–Changsha–Addis Ababa service on 12 October, operating twice weekly with Boeing 787s. The 23 September update marks Hunan Province’s second direct link to Africa and strengthens Ethiopian Airlines’ existing code-share cooperation with Chinese carriers. Although the first flight is three weeks away, the announcement is commercially significant for firms in central China that rely on Ethiopian Airlines’ Addis hub for connections to 60 African cities. By inserting a Changsha stop, China Southern taps into Hunan’s booming electric-vehicle parts sector and shortens cargo transit times by up to 18 hours compared with trucking freight to coastal airports. For passenger mobility, the route offers same-day westbound links to Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos, improving crew rotation schedules for construction and telecom projects. Ethiopian nationals, meanwhile, benefit from Changsha’s 72-hour visa-free transit, unveiled earlier this year for holders of onward tickets. The move reflects a broader geographic rebalancing: CAAC data show that western and central China now account for 27 percent of the country’s international seat capacity, up from 19 percent pre-COVID. Airlines are leveraging new bilateral traffic rights negotiated under the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation to funnel both tourists and skilled workers. Businesses should, however, monitor slot allocation at Guangzhou Baiyun, where runway-maintenance works in late October could prompt schedule tweaks. Cargo shippers are urged to book space early, as the inaugural season coincides with China’s peak e-commerce exports before Singles’ Day.
