Airport operator Finavia announced on 29 September that the €14 million upgrade of landside traffic flows and parking capacity at Rovaniemi Airport is now finished, just weeks before Lapland’s busy winter tourist season begins. The work, launched in 2025, expands car-parking spaces by 40 per cent, creates dedicated bus lanes and introduces an automated guidance system that directs arriving vehicles to the quickest drop-off zone. Rovaniemi—marketed as the “Official Hometown of Santa Claus”—handles more than 700 000 passengers each winter, half of them on charter flights from the UK, Germany and Asia. Congestion outside the small terminal had become a pinch-point for tour operators, delaying turn-arounds and causing missed connections to ski resorts in Levi and Ylläs. Finavia says the redesign will cut curb-side dwell times by up to 30 per cent and adds pre-bookable electric-vehicle charging bays to court sustainability-minded travellers. For corporate mobility managers the upgrade is timely. Several multinationals run incentive trips and client events in Lapland in December-February; smoother landside logistics mean tighter itineraries are now feasible. DHL Express, for example, told clients it will shift some time-critical snow-tech shipments from road to air via Rovaniemi because apron-to-truck transfer now takes under ten minutes. The project is part of Finavia’s wider €100 million Lapland Airport Development Programme, which has already lengthened the runway in Kittilä and installed a new wide-body stand in Ivalo. Together, the investments aim to sustain year-round traffic, diversify Lapland’s economy beyond winter tourism and position Finland as a hub for Arctic research expeditions. Finavia confirmed that the works were completed without disrupting scheduled flights and within budget despite material-cost inflation. The operator’s next task is to digitalise slot-allocation so that charter carriers can book arrival windows in real time, a service set to go live by November.
