Commuters experienced an unusually difficult journey home on 8 October after national rail operator VR cancelled several R-line services between Helsinki and Riihimäki and reported cascading delays across the Z- and IC-series. A live update at 18:09 confirmed that the 19:25 Riihimäki–Helsinki train was cancelled “due to staff shortage”, with passengers advised to wait for the next service. Throughout the afternoon peak, multiple trains recorded delays of 15–31 minutes, affecting connections to Lahti, Jyväskylä, Joensuu and Imatra. VR attributed the problems to crew rostering gaps following a spike in sick-leave absences. The operator said it attempted to redeploy standby teams but was unable to avoid cancellations on the densely used Riihimäki corridor. While Finland’s rail punctuality normally exceeds 90 percent, labour-availability challenges have grown since the pandemic. The Transport Workers’ Union AKT warned last month that retirement waves and tighter safety qualifications are creating a recruitment bottleneck. For corporate mobility planners, the incident highlights the need for contingency time when scheduling same-day business trips by rail. VR recommends using its app’s push-notification feature, which now integrates real-time platform changes at Helsinki Central. No long-distance night trains were affected, and VR said operations would return to normal by the first departures on 9 October. An internal review of staffing resilience is under way.
