Deutsche Bahn ends WorldTicket partnership, cancelling W2 Rail & Fly segments on Finnair bookings
Finland-based travel managers awoke on 6 October to news that Deutsche Bahn (DB) is terminating its distribution partnership with WorldTicket, the company that provides W2-branded Rail & Fly segments sold through global distribution systems. The move means all W2 rail coupons for travel from 15 October 2026 onward—often issued in conjunction with Finnair tickets—will be automatically cancelled. The Rail & Fly product has been popular with Nordic corporates because it allows a single e-ticket covering the flight to Germany and the onward DB train to cities such as Düsseldorf, Stuttgart or Nuremberg. By withdrawing the W2 flight-number range (6200-7249), DB is effectively removing this intermodal convenience from traditional GDS channels used by travel management companies. Finnair has advised agents that affected customers may purchase replacement Rail & Fly vouchers directly from DB once a new solution goes live on 12 October via rail-checkin.com. Eligibility will be verified through the original 105-ticket number and no reissue is required for the flight portion. Travel arrangers also have the option to refund the entire itinerary or claim a partial refund for the cancelled rail leg. Crucially, Finnair’s own Air & Rail services sold under the 9B (AccessRail) code are unaffected, nor are domestic feeder routes such as Helsinki–Pori (HEL-POR) and Savonlinna (HEL-SVL). However, companies that rely on GDS-bookable rail segments to keep journey data in a single back-office flow will need to adjust their processes. The change could impact duty-of-care tracking if rail segments booked outside the GDS are not captured in risk-management tools. For mobility specialists relocating employees to Germany or routing them through hub airports like Frankfurt, the key takeaway is to review travel policies immediately. Where seamless air-rail through-ticketing is essential—for example to comply with sustainability mandates that favour train connections—alternative booking workflows or carriers may be required until DB launches a replacement distribution model.
