TAAG strike update: São Paulo flights operating despite Angolan maintenance stoppage
Angola’s flag-carrier TAAG entered day three of a five-day strike by its Aircraft Maintenance Technicians’ Union on 13 October, but the airline says its Luanda–São Paulo rotation continues on schedule. In a press release posted to its website, TAAG reported zero unplanned cancellations on 12 and 13 October after activating a contingency plan that includes wet-leasing a Hi Fly A330 and reassigning management-licensed engineers to priority checks. TAAG operates three weekly flights to São Paulo/Guarulhos, serving a niche market of oil-and-gas executives shuttling between Angola and Brazil as well as Brazilian construction firms active in Luanda. The airline warned, however, that delays are possible if unexpected technical snags arise because only essential inspections are being performed. Passengers are urged to monitor flight DT 747 schedules and update contact details to receive re-accommodation messages. For Brazilian mobility managers the episode is a stress test of redundancy planning on a corridor with limited competition. LATAM Brasil codeshares on the route but cannot pick up TAAG’s entire demand at short notice. Companies with tight project timelines should consider routing staff via Johannesburg or Lisbon if the strike escalates; both alternatives add at least four hours of travel time. The maintenance union has served notice of additional stoppages from 6–10 November and twice in December. TAAG says talks are ongoing but has so far not met demands for a 12 percent wage rise and improved pension contributions. The Angolan Civil Aviation Authority has authorised foreign wet-lease aircraft for up to 90 days to protect air connectivity. While the strike originates outside Brazil, its potential to disrupt a critical emerging-market link places it on the radar of global-mobility teams. Travel risk assessments for the Angola–Brazil corridor should be updated and travellers briefed on contingency routings, visa validity and vaccination rules when transiting third countries.
