Denmark prolongs temporary checks at German land border until May 2027
Denmark’s Justice Ministry has announced that the temporary checks it conducts at the land border with Germany will remain in force for another six-month period, now running through 12 May 2027. Copenhagen justified the renewal with reference to an “unchanged terrorist threat level”, the risk of sabotage against critical infrastructure and continued secondary migration flows within the Schengen area. For travellers the extension means that anyone entering Denmark by car or train from Schleswig-Holstein should continue to expect spot inspections of passports or national ID cards. Commercial drivers have been advised by Danish and German transport associations to factor potential waiting times of 10-30 minutes into their schedules, especially around the busy Padborg and Kruså crossings. Rail operator DSB said it will keep a 15-minute buffer in its timetables for the Hamburg–Copenhagen route. German border municipalities such as Flensburg and Harrislee fear renewed tailbacks during Danish peak-hour controls; local chambers of commerce are calling for priority lanes for cross-border workers. The move highlights the wider reality that the Schengen acquis now allows long-running “temporary” controls. Germany itself has carried out controls on all of its land borders since 2024 and, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, will do so “at least until March 2027”. EU institutions tolerate the measures but have repeatedly urged member states to adopt more targeted, intelligence-led policing instead of blanket checks. For multinational companies Denmark’s decision adds another layer of complexity for staff mobility within the EU. HR and travel managers should remind employees to carry physical ID documents, ensure that residence titles are valid for the full travel period and monitor possible knock-on effects such as train delays that could trigger missed flight connections in Hamburg. Logistics providers may wish to review just-in-time delivery schedules for components moving between Danish and German plants. In practice, business-critical travel is unlikely to be seriously disrupted, but the episode underlines the importance of contingency planning when operating in a Schengen area that is no longer automatically border-free. Companies with frequent shuttles across the frontier may also explore AEO-status facilitated lanes or trusted-traveller programmes where available.
