Interior Ministry publishes updated Asylum Procedure Implementing Regulation; new uniform cards for applicants and displaced persons
Austria’s Federal Legal Information System (RIS) this morning released the consolidated text of the Asylum Act Implementing Ordinance 2005 (AsylG-DV), incorporating the latest amendment published in Federal Law Gazette II No. 160/2026. The new version, dated 13 July 2026, brings the regulation into line with the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum that became operational on 12 June. The most visible change for migrants – and for HR departments assisting expatriates with status changes – is the redesign of all asylum-related residence documents. From today, verfahrenskarten (procedure cards), Aufenthaltsberechtigungskarten (residence cards), subsidiary-protection cards and the “Ausweis für Vertriebene” (displaced-persons ID) will follow the EU-wide uniform format under Regulation (EU) 2017/1954 and carry a two-line machine-readable zone plus a chip ready for the forthcoming Digital Travel Credential pilot. The ordinance also codifies the new ‘screening procedure’ that replaces the traditional admissibility phase: all applicants receive a bilingual family-interview form and undergo basic security checks within seven days. Families can now choose from 17 language combinations (including Kurdish, Pashto and Ukrainian), a move welcomed by NGOs that had criticised the German-only paperwork. For employers, the bigger headline is that asylum-seekers allocated to provinces with labour shortages may receive a limited work authorisation after 30 days instead of the previous three-month stand-down. Companies must still obtain an employment permit under the Aliens Employment Act, but the Federal Asylum Office will issue an e-confirmation that can be uploaded directly to the AMS portal, cutting paperwork cycles by a week. All existing cards remain valid until their printed expiry, but the Interior Ministry recommends exchanging them at the next appointment to avoid travel hiccups when automated border gates start checking the enhanced security features in early 2027. Mobility teams should brief affected assignees and schedule replacement appointments well before the year-end travel peak.
