Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has released its latest traffic figures, confirming that the city’s aviation rebound is gathering pace. According to the statistics published on 20 July 2026, HKIA handled 5.12 million passengers in June—up 7.9 % year-on-year—while flight movements grew 2.3 % to 31,940. Cargo throughput climbed an even stronger 6.8 % to 436,000 tonnes, driven by a 19.5 % jump in trans-shipment volumes. Japan and mainland China led passenger growth, with connecting traffic accounting for the biggest share of the increase. For the first half of 2026, passenger numbers reached 32.8 million (-11.7 % YoY), flight movements totalled 200,685 (-4.4 %), and cargo rose 4.1 % to 2.5 million tonnes. On a rolling 12-month basis, passenger throughput topped 64.4 million while cargo exceeded 5.17 million tonnes—both double-digit improvements on 2025 levels. AAHK attributed the momentum to a steady restoration of regional routes and sustained e-commerce demand. The airport’s performance is also being recognised by the industry. In June, HKIA was named “Airport of the Year – Major Cargo Hub” at the World Air Cargo Awards and won the “Air Cargo Innovation Award” for its SmartCollect import initiative. It was simultaneously crowned “Best Global Airport” for the 11th consecutive year at the 2026 AFLAS Awards. Beyond the headline numbers, HKIA is doubling-down on sustainability and digitalisation. The airport cargo community has become the world’s first to adopt the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) framework, setting a common benchmark for greenhouse-gas reporting across freight operators. Chapman Fong, Director of Hub Development, said the move will “streamline cargo handling and enhance competitiveness” as shippers demand greener supply chains. For multinationals, the data point to faster transit options through Hong Kong and a recovering belly-hold network—critical for time-sensitive sectors such as luxury, pharma and high-tech. Organisations planning regional assignments should expect shorter lead times for shipping personal effects and more seat availability on popular routes between Hong Kong, Japan and mainland China, though yield pressure could drive airfare volatility during the summer peak.
