Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, just 40 kilometres north-west of Hong Kong’s Central district, announced on 21 July 2026 that it has already processed 1.022 million foreign passengers this year, smashing the previous half-year record and reaching the one-million mark 71 days earlier than in 2025. The airport’s border-inspection station said total cross-border throughput—counting Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and foreign travellers—has exceeded 3.5 million so far, up 6.7 percent year-on-year, making Bao’an the fourth-busiest air gateway on the Chinese mainland for international traffic. Officials credit China’s expanded 15-day and 30-day visa-free policies for travellers from Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and several European countries for the surge; more than 300,000 of this year’s foreign arrivals entered visa-free. The airport added new routes to Tashkent and Kathmandu and increased frequencies to Vientiane, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, bringing its international network to 63 destinations across nearly 40 countries. Star Alliance, SkyTeam and oneworld members now all operate at the facility, reflecting Shenzhen’s growing role as a secondary hub for the Greater Bay Area (GBA). For Hong Kong-based multinational companies, the numbers matter. Door-to-door travel time from Central to Bao’an is about 75 minutes via the Shenzhen Bay Bridge or 50 minutes on the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail to Futian plus a 30-minute metro transfer. Mobility managers say executives are increasingly using Bao’an for long-haul itineraries—especially to emerging markets in Southeast and South Asia—because fares are often 15–25 percent cheaper than departures from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Cargo shippers are making similar calculations: Shenzhen’s customs facilitation programmes allow “bonded trucking” to HKIA within five hours, giving exporters another routing option when HKIA slots are constrained. Cross-border synergies are likely to deepen once the rebuilt Huanggang port opens later this year with full co-location immigration clearance, slashing coach transit times between Shenzhen’s central business district and Kowloon. Airlines at HKIA are watching closely; several have quietly asked the Hong Kong Airport Authority to accelerate Terminal 2 expansion and to consider inter-modal baggage through-check deals with Bao’an to keep premium traffic in the city. The record throughput underscores a broader post-pandemic trend: as the GBA integrates, Hong Kong’s talent-mobility and travel programmes must be planned at a metropolitan—not merely a city—level. Companies that ignore the growing role of neighbouring Mainland airports risk higher costs and longer journey times for regional staff rotations and short-term project deployments.
