Germany’s ‘Opportunity Card’ gives job-seekers full 12 months to find work
A fresh policy explainer published on 27 July 2026 has clarified the practical rules of Germany’s new Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), the points-based job-seeker residence permit that replaced the classic Job-Seeker Visa in June 2024. The update confirms that non-EU professionals can now reside in Germany for up to 365 days—even longer if they convert to a work permit—while taking up to 20 hours of paid employment per week. Applicants qualify via two tracks. Route A is open to those with a German-recognised degree or vocational training certificate; Route B uses a six-point grid covering qualifications, language, experience and age. Baseline requirements remain A1 German or B2 English and proof of subsistence funds of roughly €12,000. The clarification matters for employers because holders may undertake short "trial employment" lasting two weeks without securing prior labour-market approval—an attractive on-site audition tool for SMEs that struggle with remote hiring. However, freelancers and digital nomads are cautioned that the card is not a self-employment visa; invoicing foreign clients as a main activity risks status revocation. Immigration advisers say demand is surging: German missions in India and Brazil report Opportunity Card appointment slots filling three months out. To stay competitive, HR departments should align relocation allowances with the 12-month timeline, pre-book integration courses and prepare conversion paperwork to the EU Blue Card or Section 18a/b skilled-worker permits once a contract is signed.
