In a move long-awaited by frequent travellers and global mobility managers, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Service Canada have opened a fully-digital passport-renewal channel that can be used anywhere in Canada. Speaking in Vancouver on July 28 2026, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said the system is now available to Canadians aged 16 and over whose five- or ten-year passports were issued within the past 15 years. Applicants upload a recent commercial digital photo, complete an online form, and submit payment in one sitting; supporting documents such as proof of citizenship no longer have to be mailed or presented in person. IRCC and Service Canada piloted the platform for almost two years, starting with just ten files a day and gradually scaling to 2,000 daily renewals. As of the production launch, the daily cap has been removed. The government expects roughly 4.6 million passport applications in 2026, of which about 60 percent are renewals; officials estimate up to two million could now be processed online, easing line-ups at more than 300 Service Canada centres nationwide. The online channel carries a 20-business-day processing service standard (plus mailing time). Under the Service Fee Act’s “no-fee guarantee”, clients will receive their passport free of charge if that standard is missed by more than 10 business days. Real-time status updates will be pushed to applicants’ e-mails and IRCC secure accounts, giving travellers more predictability when booking international trips or work assignments. For employers managing assignees, the change removes the need to schedule half-day trips to a passport office or courier original documents—often a bottleneck when arranging last-minute business travel. Mobility teams should, however, note key eligibility limits: online renewal is not yet available to Canadians living abroad, minors under 16, or holders with more than six months’ validity remaining. Individuals whose passports are damaged, lost or stolen must still apply in person or by mail. IRCC says broader eligibility, including overseas renewals, may be phased in once system performance and security reviews are complete. Industry stakeholders such as the Canadian Employee Relocation Council welcomed the announcement, calling it a “game-changer” for global talent deployment during peak travel seasons. Service Canada confirmed that in-person and mail-in channels will remain for those who prefer traditional methods or fall outside the online criteria, preserving redundancy in the event of system outages.
