The framework, awarded after an 18-month procurement, switches all Secure English-language Tests required for Skilled Worker, Health & Care, Student and family routes onto a ‘digital-by-default’ platform with remote proctoring and AI-driven identity checks. A parliamentary letter from the Public Accounts Committee confirms the contract term runs from 3 August 2026 to 3 August 2031, with an optional three-year extension to 2034. The winning consortium—rumoured to include two major EdTech firms and a biometric-verification provider—must stand up a UK-wide network of pop-up test centres for applicants who cannot access stable internet, while encouraging 70 % of candidates to sit the exam remotely by year two. For employers the new system promises faster turnaround. Test results will flow via API straight into the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) case-work platform, eliminating the need for applicants to upload PDFs. The Home Office predicts a two-day reduction in average Skilled Worker processing times once volumes stabilise. The scheme nevertheless raises compliance questions. Sponsors remain responsible for ensuring that applicants have met the English-language requirement at the correct level (usually CEFR B1 spoken and listening). Organisations should update onboarding checklists and—in sectors such as care and hospitality—consider offering subsidised virtual test ‘boots camps’ to speed workforce deployment. The rollout also dovetails with UKVI’s wider digitisation agenda. By migrating both identity evidence (eVisas) and language evidence onto cloud services, the department says it is creating a “single source of truth” for caseworkers and Border Force officers. Civil-society groups will watch closely to ensure the technology does not disadvantage applicants in regions with low connectivity or digital literacy.
