French air-traffic controllers lift September strike alert, stabilising flight operations
France’s powerful SNCTA air-traffic-controllers’ union confirmed on 12 September – and reiterated in industry briefings reviewed on 14 September – that it has withdrawn the ‘social alarm’ it filed for 2 September. The U-turn means no nationwide ATC strike is currently scheduled, providing rare operational certainty for carriers that rely on French airspace hubs and overflights. The decision follows a last-minute deal with the Directorate-General for Civil Aviation (DGAC) that brings forward parts of a long-promised recruitment plan and tweaks night-shift allowances in line with inflation. According to Eurocontrol, an all-day walk-out would have caused as many as 3,500 flight cancellations and 14,000 delays across Europe because 67 % of continent-wide traffic touches French skies at some point on its journey. For mobility managers, the reprieve reduces the risk of knock-on delays for itineraries that do not even touch French airports, such as London–Rome or Madrid–Berlin. However, carriers warn that local industrial action at regional towers – separate from SNCTA – can still flare with 5-day notice. Companies are advised to keep disruption clauses in vendor contracts and to prefer morning departures where possible; statistically they suffer fewer cumulative delays when the network is strained. The next potential flash point is Italy’s nationwide ATC stoppage on 30 September, which could again prompt French solidarity actions. Employers should keep contingency routings on file and remind travellers to enable airline app notifications.
