Malaysia Airlines announced on 24 September that it will launch daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Shenzhen and Changsha from the upcoming IATA winter season, bringing its mainland China gateways to nine. The carrier carried 27 per cent more passengers to China in the first half of 2026 than a year earlier and expects to handle 52,000 travellers over the upcoming Golden Week. Flights will be operated with Airbus A330-200 aircraft offering lie-flat business-class seats and belly-hold cargo capacity aimed at e-commerce shipments. The airline has also inked interline and codeshare expansions with China Southern and Xiamen Airlines to feed secondary markets such as Nanning and Guiyang. For corporate travel buyers, the additional frequencies create same-day connection options to Penang’s electronics hub and oil-and-gas centres in East Malaysia. Malaysia Airlines’ inclusion in the oneworld alliance allows through-ticketing with American Airlines and Qantas, potentially shortening total journey times between the U.S./Australia and China’s Greater Bay Area. The move underscores strong demand recovery on China–ASEAN corridors, supported by Beijing’s unilateral visa-free policy for Malaysian passport holders introduced in 2025. Competitors Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways are expected to respond with extra capacity in Q4.
