The 4th China Air Transport Association (CATA) Aviation Conference opened in Beijing on 17 September under the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Civil Aviation.” Over 2,000 delegates from airlines, airports, tech firms and academia are attending the three-day event, where keynote speakers emphasised AI’s potential to streamline border clearance, automate disruption management and personalise the traveller journey. CAAC Vice-Administrator Han Jun told the plenary that China aims to build a “modern, smart civil-aviation system” by 2030. Trials already underway at Beijing Daxing and Shanghai Pudong airports include biometric e-gate corridors capable of processing international passengers in eight seconds, and predictive analytics platforms that re-route connecting travellers during irregular operations. On the margins of the summit, Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and Turkish Airlines inked cooperation agreements covering AI-enabled interline check-in and shared data standards, moves that will directly benefit code-share passengers. Shanghai Airport Authority announced it will open an innovation sandbox where start-ups can test robotics and baggage-tracking solutions in a live-terminal environment without lengthy regulatory approvals. For multinational travel managers the takeaway is that China is investing heavily in seamless-border technologies—facial recognition, digital travel credentials and real-time risk alerts—that could cut connection times for international itineraries. Vendors cautioned, however, that privacy legislation lags the pace of deployment, meaning travellers must balance convenience with data-protection considerations.
