Cyprus’ decade-long bid to join the EU’s passport-free Schengen Area has entered its end-game, with Brussels now saying that only two “political specificities” block full accession: the management of the Green Line that divides the island and the status of the British Sovereign Base Areas. Diplomatic sources told KNEWS that Cyprus’ technical preparation – 120 individual milestones ranging from biometric border gates to the rollout of EURODAC upgrades – has already won praise from eight EU member states. However, Nicosia must still convince partners that the Green Line will not become a back-door migration route and that police checks inside the British Bases can be brought up to Schengen standards. Foreign-ministry envoy Philippa Karsera Christodoulides spent last week in Brussels and The Hague trying to defuse objections from the Netherlands and Austria, two of the bloc’s most sceptical voices on Schengen enlargement. According to the same report, Dutch officials are reserving judgment until they see legally watertight guarantees on the Green Line and detailed cooperation protocols with the Bases’ police force. The timing is politically sensitive. President Nikos Christodoulides wants a date for accession – or accession itself – before the February 2028 presidential election. Schengen membership would allow business and leisure travellers to fly from Cyprus to 25 European countries without systematic border checks, slashing connection times at hubs such as Frankfurt and Paris and making the island more attractive as a regional headquarters location. For global-mobility managers the message is one of cautious optimism. Technically, Cyprus ticks every Schengen box: entry/exit systems are live, ETIAS is on schedule and visa data already flows into the VIS database. The remaining hurdles are political, not operational, meaning that companies can start planning for a Schengen-ready Cyprus but should build contingencies for a delay similar to the one that dogged Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria. If the Green Line and Bases issues are resolved in the coming months, the European Commission could table a formal proposal allowing ministers to vote as early as spring 2027. A unanimous Council decision would then lift air- and seaport checks between Cyprus and the rest of the area – a step that could shave hours off door-to-door itineraries for the island’s 70,000-strong expatriate workforce.
