Belarus Border Bottleneck: Trucks Face 88-Hour Wait at Koroszczyn Crossing
A combination of heightened security checks, limited customs staffing and a surge in east-west freight has produced one of the worst traffic jams of the year on Poland’s eastern frontier. According to the crowdsourced monitoring portal KolejkaNaGranicy.pl, as of 19:30 local time on 4 October truck drivers trying to enter Poland at the Koroszczyn–Kozłowiczy checkpoint (the main gateway on the A2 corridor from Belarus) were facing an estimated 88 hours and 25 minutes of queuing time. That is roughly three and a half days spent idling on the hard shoulder – an expensive delay for time-sensitive cargo such as perishable food, automotive parts and high-value electronics. Background conversations with Polish logistics associations suggest the backlog began building on Friday evening when Belarusian customs temporarily reduced the number of inspection bays after a radiation-detection sensor malfunctioned. Although the equipment was restored on Saturday afternoon, the accumulated queue now stretches more than 30 kilometres into Belarusian territory. Polish border guards have meanwhile stepped-up vehicle searches following several high-profile smuggling incidents earlier in the week. The knock-on effects are already visible across supply chains. Several large grocery distributors in eastern Poland have re-routed fruit and vegetable shipments via Ukraine, adding 300 kilometres to the journey. Automotive suppliers in Łódź and Poznań report that just-in-time deliveries of wire harnesses are running 24–36 hours late, forcing contingency production planning. Freight forwarders are warning clients to expect premium surcharges for guaranteed slots or to consider rail as an alternative, though capacity on the broad-gauge Iron Silk Road line through Małaszewicze is limited. For multinational companies operating Polish plants, the episode underscores the vulnerability of overland routes that traverse geopolitical flashpoints. Experts advise building at least three days of buffer stock for components originating in or transiting through Belarus, and to update business-travel policies for drivers so that rest-time rules remain compliant during extraordinary delays. At policy level, the latest congestion may add pressure on Warsaw and Brussels to accelerate digital pre-clearance tools promised under the EU’s Smart Borders package. A separate pilot allowing trusted-trader lanes at selected eastern crossings is scheduled for Q1 2027; industry voices argue the Koroszczyn situation shows reforms cannot wait that long.
