Poland extends internal border checks with Germany and Lithuania until 30 March 2027
Poland’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) has prolonged temporary controls on its land borders with Germany and Lithuania for a further six months, from 2 October 2026 through 30 March 2027. Internal border checks inside the Schengen Area were first re-introduced on 7 July 2025 in response to what Warsaw describes as “migration pressure orchestrated by Belarus.” Since then Polish border guards have inspected more than 4.5 million travellers and 2.3 million vehicles. Officers have refused entry to almost 1,300 people on the Lithuanian frontier and a further 1,200 on the German side. Under EU law, Schengen countries may re-establish controls only in exceptional circumstances, and must notify Brussels every two months. The European Commission has already recorded successive Polish notifications, most recently covering 5 April–1 October 2026. Warsaw’s latest decision therefore signals its intention to continue controls beyond the period previously cleared by the Commission and Council. For cross-border commuters and logistics firms the extension means continued spot checks, potential delays and mandatory travel documentation (passports or national ID cards). Although most crossings remain open, drivers should plan extra transit time—particularly at busy points such as Świecko (Germany) and Budzisko (Lithuania)—and ensure that vehicle manifests and passenger lists are readily available for inspection. From a corporate-mobility standpoint, Polish-based multinationals will need to keep posted workers carrying proof of employment and residence status, as random checks inside 20 km of the frontier have become more common. HR teams should update travel policies to reflect the need for hard-copy IDs even on what were previously document-free intra-Schengen trips. Companies operating shuttle buses for shift workers between western Poland and German plants should review driving schedules and communicate new timings to staff. In the medium term, the move highlights continuing fragmentation inside Schengen. With neighbouring Germany also extending its own controls with Poland and Czechia, regional supply chains face a patchwork of inspection regimes. Mobility managers should monitor further Polish notifications to the Commission, as the government has hinted that controls will stay in place “until the hybrid pressure on the EU’s eastern flank subsides.”
