Travellers must pre-register on both sides for Huanggang joint-clearance e-channels
With less than a week to go before the revamped Huanggang Port comes online, Hong Kong and mainland authorities have confirmed that all users of the new automated “collaborative inspection and joint clearance” channels must register their biometric data with immigration services on both sides of the border. Assistant Immigration Director Jacky Wong said the process “takes only a few seconds” and that extra staff will be stationed at self-service kiosks during the first days of operation. Under the scheme, travellers insert the identity document required by their destination—typically a Mainland Travel Permit or Home Return Permit—and pass through a three-gate corridor that verifies fingerprints and facial images before issuing simultaneous exit and entry approvals. Officials expect the port to handle up to 100,000 passengers a day once fully ramped up. Unlike Hong Kong’s existing e-channels, which store data solely with the city’s Immigration Department, the joint-clearance database will be shared with Shenzhen’s Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection and Customs authorities. Privacy advocates have urged clear retention policies, but border experts note that similar data-sharing frameworks already operate at Hong Kong International Airport’s SkyPier ferry terminal. For corporate mobility teams, the key operational change is that staff must ensure their Mainland Travel Permits are valid for at least six months before enrolment, as expired documents will trigger gate rejections on both systems. From a business-travel standpoint the joint e-channel could shave five to eight minutes off each crossing—time savings that multiply for commuters who make several round trips per week. Logistics firms anticipate smoother driver movements too: a separate “joint one-stop lane” will let enrolled truckers clear both customs and immigration in a single stop. The enhancement advances Beijing’s goal of building a “one-hour living circle” within the Greater Bay Area, and helps Hong Kong compete with Guangzhou South Railway Station, which processed more than one million trips on National Day. Companies should roll out communications telling employees how to register in advance via Hong Kong’s “HK e-Channel” mobile app or at enrolment counters opening this weekend. HR teams may also wish to organise on-site fingerprint collection for frequent travellers to avoid first-day bottlenecks.
