Huanggang Port sees passenger numbers nearly double predecessor within first week
Just five days after its 12 October inauguration, Shenzhen’s new Huanggang Port is handling an average of 80,000 passengers a day—around 1.5 to 2 times the volume processed by the ageing facility it replaced—according to Hong Kong Secretary for Security Chris Tang. Speaking on RTHK radio at midday on 17 October 2026, Tang said Friday’s tally alone hit 92,000 travellers as residents headed north for the Chung Yeung Festival long weekend. Despite the surge, clearance times remained below five minutes for most users, thanks to a co-location model that houses Hong Kong and mainland officers in one hall and to 300,000 travellers who preregistered for facial-recognition e-channels via the Immigration Department’s mobile app. Authorities have contingency plans to open all manual counters and deploy crowd stewards when volumes spike above 100,000, Tang added. Preliminary data also show traffic at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line fell 3-7 percent during the same period, indicating that the new port is already redistributing flows across the Greater Bay Area network. Transport analysts say this could relieve chronic bottlenecks at Lo Wu during Christmas and Lunar New Year. For companies with staff shuttling between Hong Kong headquarters and Shenzhen R&D hubs, the numbers validate travel-policy updates that treat Huanggang as the default crossing outside peak holiday periods. However, HR teams should emphasise that preregistration for the “collaborative inspection” e-channel is strongly recommended to maintain sub-five-minute transit promises in mobility policies. Looking ahead, success at Huanggang is likely to accelerate joint-clearance pilots at other checkpoints along the Pearl River Delta, potentially shortening daily commutes for the estimated 70,000 cross-border workers who reside in one jurisdiction and work in the other.
