Updated ‘shortage-occupation’ list opens fast-track work-permit channel
Immigration consultancy ITARA published an explainer on 30 June outlining France’s newly updated list of métiers en tension—occupations facing labour shortages that qualify for streamlined work-permit processing. The list, released by decree on 28 June, now covers 61 job titles, adding cybersecurity analysts, geriatric nurses and heat-pump installers. Under Article L.435-4 of the Immigration Control and Integration Act (26 January 2024), employers hiring for a shortage role are exempt from the labour-market test and enjoy a ten-day SLA for permit issuance.

Employers unfamiliar with French administrative requirements can streamline applications through VisaHQ, whose France portal (https://www.visahq.com/france/) provides up-to-date checklists, digital form filling and real-time status tracking, neatly complementing the government’s ten-day service level agreement.

The expansion is seen as pivotal to meeting France’s climate-transition and elder-care staffing goals while keeping immigration numbers politically palatable. ITARA stresses that geographic zoning still applies: a role must be in shortage in the region where the job is located. For example, full-stack developers are now fast-tracked in Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes but not in Brittany, where unemployment in the sector remains above 6 %. Companies must submit a conformity audit of the employment contract and salary—typically at least the regional median—for approval. For mobility managers, the new list offers an opportunity to accelerate inbound assignments, especially for multinationals building AI or renewable-energy hubs. However, the Conseil d’État’s May 2026 advisory opinion warns that permits issued under the shortage-occupation route may be revoked if the employee changes role within the first year. HR teams are advised to update global dashboards, retrain recruiters on the new codes and engage with regional DIRECCTE offices, which have been instructed to issue guidance by mid-July.
