Customs Officers Stage Two-Hour Warning Strike at Famagusta Port
The Güç-Sen Customs Workers’ Union walked off the job between 08:00 and 10:00 on Friday, 3 July, at the Turkish-controlled Famagusta port, temporarily halting the acceptance and processing of import and export declarations. Union president Ediz Kanatlı said the stoppage was a “warning shot” over stalled pay-scale negotiations and staffing shortages that have doubled clearance times since January. Although the strike did not extend to the nearby Ledra Street and Ayios Dometios land crossings, freight forwarders reported delays for lorries using the port as a gateway to the northern part of the island. Several Cyprus-based manufacturers who route raw materials through Famagusta for finishing in industrial zones around Nicosia said they had to rebook cargo via Larnaca or Mersin at short notice, incurring extra trucking costs and potential delivery penalties. Kanatlı warned that a 24-hour strike is planned for 15 July if the ‘co-administration’ of the port does not present a wage indexation offer in line with the north’s 7 % inflation rate.

Employers using the port are advised to build ten-day buffers into supply schedules and to ensure ATA carnets and EUR.1 certificates are pre-endorsed, as on-site document services cannot be guaranteed during any future action. The episode highlights the fragility of cross-line logistics on the divided island. With north-south trade volumes up 18 % year-on-year since Green Line transit rules were relaxed in 2024, even a brief stoppage reverberates through just-in-time production chains. Mobility managers with expatriate staff in Northern Cyprus should review contingency plans for essential imports such as medical supplies and IT equipment.
