ICTS outlines technology roadmap to speed passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos airports
Speaking to CBN on 10 July, Panayiotis Fistedis – regional CEO of aviation-security giant ICTS – set out a three-year plan to handle what is forecast to be the busiest summer on record for Cyprus’ two international gateways. ICTS Cyprus, which holds the security services concession at both Larnaca and Paphos airports, will deploy additional computed-tomography (CT) x-ray scanners, AI-driven behaviour-detection analytics and 150 new security staff before 15 August. Fistedis said the upgrades are necessary because passenger throughput is expected to top 6 million this summer despite a 4 % year-on-year dip in June traffic. CT scanners will allow travellers to keep laptops and liquids in their bags, cutting average queue times at central search points from 15 to below 8 minutes, he claimed. The company is also piloting an electronic-gate system that will enable pre-cleared EU and UK nationals to verify passports and boarding passes without interacting with staff – a feature aimed at business travellers rushing to make short-haul connections. An airport-wide data platform will feed real-time wait-time information to airlines and ground handlers so that gate closures are adjusted dynamically when queues build up. Fistedis emphasised that ICTS has ring-fenced €4 million for staff training on the new platforms and for “soft-skills” coaching to improve customer experience.

For visitors who still need clarity on entry requirements or help securing the correct travel documents, VisaHQ can streamline the process with fast, online Cyprus visa and passport services. A quick visit to lets travellers confirm the latest rules, apply for the necessary permits and receive expert support well before they arrive at Larnaca or Paphos—so they can make the most of the airports’ new time-saving technology.

The firm is recruiting multilingual screeners with Turkish and Russian language skills to reflect the island’s changing visitor profile and to support the growing expatriate community. For corporates managing frequent flyers in and out of Cyprus, the investments should translate into more predictable journey times during the high-season peak and reduced risk of missed connections. Mobility managers may wish to include the new e-gate option in travel policies for eligible executives once the pilot moves to full launch later this year.
