Greater Bay Airlines Introduces New Fuel Surcharge Effective 16 July
Hong Kong-based Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) has published a revised fuel-surcharge table that applies to all tickets issued on or after 16 July 2026. The levy ranges from HK$165 on Hong Kong–mainland China sectors to HK$725 on the Maldives route, with intermediate amounts—HK$290 on Japan flights and HK$241 on most other international sectors. Equivalent local-currency amounts apply for tickets purchased overseas. The change is GBA’s first surcharge adjustment in eight months and follows Brent crude’s climb above US$92 per barrel. For corporate travel managers the new fees mean that an economy return trip from Hong Kong to Tokyo will now include HK$580 in surcharges, a cost that may not appear in headline fare comparisons. GBA is positioning itself as a low-fare challenger to Cathay Pacific and HK Express, but surcharges can erode its price advantage if not budgeted correctly. Travel-management companies should update fare databases and self-booking-tool algorithms to capture the extra ‘YQ’ amount, which is collected at time of ticketing and is non-refundable if the passenger cancels voluntarily. Frequent-flyer redemptions are also affected: while award seats remain mileage-based, the fuel surcharge is payable in cash, making ‘free’ tickets more expensive. Companies that reimburse staff for mileage tickets should set clear policies on whether ancillary surcharges are covered. Practical tip: Because the surcharge is calculated per sector, itineraries routed via Hong Kong to third-country destinations may attract multiple charges. Consider non-stop alternatives or negotiate “all-in” corporate fares that lock in the surcharge for the contract term.
