Heavy-Goods Ban on Alpine Routes as Turin Prefect Widens Festival Restrictions
In a supplemental decree issued late on 22 July and entering force at midnight 24 July, the Prefect of Turin extended the existing truck ban on the A32 motorway and parallel state roads SS24 and SS25 to 21:00 on Saturday, 25 July. The measure targets vehicles over 7.5 tonnes heading toward the French border and is designed to protect public safety during the Festival dell’Alta Felicità and associated No-TAV demonstrations. While Italy is the issuing authority, the prohibition directly impacts French exporters shipping automotive parts from Lyon and Grenoble to Turin’s manufacturing belt. Freight forwarders estimate that each rerouted truck via the Mont Blanc corridor adds 120 km and €180 in tolls and fuel. Customs brokers also warn of potential bottlenecks at the La Prairie parking area near Modane, where drivers will cluster to wait out the ban. French hauliers caught violating the decree face fines up to €1,732 and vehicle impoundment. Supply-chain managers should resequence just-in-time deliveries or shift urgent loads to intermodal rail services through the Fréjus rail tunnel, which remains unaffected. Time-sensitive pharma shipments may need temperature-controlled rail containers to meet GDP compliance. The episode highlights a broader trend of local security events influencing trans-Alpine freight. Companies with regular France–Italy flows should map alternative corridors, maintain dual-carrier contracts and include festival calendars in logistics risk dashboards.
