Helsinki Airport closes key taxiway 14–17 September, rerouting wide-body stands and affecting peak-hour departures

Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, issued a NOTAM on 14 September confirming that Taxiway AD between stands 21-24 at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) will be closed for resurfacing until 17 September at 11:00 UTC. Stands 21, 22 and 23—popular with wide-body and long-haul narrow-body aircraft—are also out of service. During the works all aircraft normally assigned to those positions are being towed to the remote West Pier stands, adding up to ten minutes of taxi time for outbound flights during morning and evening wave-banks. Airlines including Finnair, Qatar Airways and Japan Airlines have published revised stand allocations and warned of possible minor delays. For corporate travel managers the short-term disruption means allowing extra connection time at HEL, especially for intra-Schengen transfers where passengers must now use buses from remote stands to the central terminal. Lounges in the non-Schengen area remain open, but Finavia has advised premium passengers to arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than usual for boarding. Cargo operators are also adjusting. DHL said its nightly A300 freighter will operate 20 minutes earlier to ensure slot compliance, while Finnair Cargo is temporarily consolidating US-bound perishables onto afternoon flights to avoid peak congestion. Finavia notes that the resurfacing is part of a €40 million apron-renewal project designed to prepare HEL for growing A350 and Boeing 787 traffic ahead of the 2027 tourist season. Once completed, the new asphalt and LED centre-line lighting will support Category IIIb operations in low visibility, reducing winter delays—a long-term gain that should offset this week’s inconvenience.
