A healthcare provider contracted by the Île-de-France regional health agency has documented bruises, fractures and mental-health crises in migrants forcibly returned from the UK as part of the ‘one in, one out’ Anglo-French pilot. Detailed in evidence submitted to the French National Assembly and reported by the Guardian on 14 September, the Samusocial de Paris study covers 90 men removed between January and June 2026. Under the scheme, launched in August 2025, one irregular Channel-crossing asylum seeker is returned to France for every asylum seeker legally transferred to the UK. So far about 1,400 people have been sent back. Medical certificates cite injuries consistent with handcuff restraint and “repeated blows” while in UK detention; one individual required A&E treatment on arrival. Médecins Sans Frontières called the process a “machine for psychological destruction”. A Home Office spokesperson insisted that detainees have access to healthcare and that no one deemed unfit to travel is removed. Contractor Mitie, which supplies detention-custody officers, has been asked for comment. Although the pilot targets irregular migration rather than business mobility, it shapes the broader policy landscape in which corporate relocations occur. Companies relocating staff from conflict-affected regions must account for heightened scrutiny—both political and operational—around asylum and humanitarian claims. The controversy may also affect forthcoming negotiations on a permanent UK–France returns agreement, which could indirectly influence short-term business travel across the Channel if border resources are re-allocated. Employers should monitor reputational risks when seconding staff to Calais or Dunkirk logistics hubs, where protests linked to the pilot have periodically disrupted freight movements. Duty-of-care teams are advised to track local security updates and to review travel insurance policies that exclude civil-unrest-related delays.
