Travellers to and from Vienna International Airport (VIE) face major timetable changes after a key stretch of Vienna’s S-Bahn core line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof shut on 7 September 2026 for a 14-month modernisation project. Although long-distance ÖBB Railjets continue to run every 30 minutes, the popular S7 airport train now terminates at St. Marx, while the City Airport Train (CAT) has switched to an express-bus service between the airport and Wien Mitte. The CAT buses, operated in partnership with Blaguss, run up to five times per hour and take 21 minutes. All CAT City Check-In facilities at Wien Mitte are suspended, meaning passengers must check in luggage at the airport itself. Regional Express REX 7 services still link the airport with Hauptbahnhof in roughly 20 minutes, providing onward connections to U-Bahn line U1. Vienna Airport Bus operator ÖBB-Postbus has supplemented its network with two new routes from 5 September: one direct to Karlsplatz and another to Praterstern, both important business and conference districts. Early-morning and night departures ensure near-24-hour coverage. Taxi and ride-hail demand has already risen by an estimated 15 % during peak hours, according to the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. Corporate travel managers should update itineraries, especially for visiting executives accustomed to the fast CAT train. The Vienna Tourist Board recommends allowing extra buffer time and checking route planners before departure. Companies hosting events at the Austria Center Vienna or UNO-City should advise participants about the revised bus services. The rail upgrade will deliver double-track operation and full ETCS signalling by late 2027, ultimately cutting airport-city travel times. Until then, mobility stakeholders must adapt to a multimodal patchwork. Digital ticketing in ÖBB’s “Simply Go” app and real-time information screens at VIE aim to ease the transition.
