Himalaya Airlines restores nonstop Kathmandu–Shanghai flights, reopening vital Nepal-China corridor

Nepal–China joint-venture carrier Himalaya Airlines resumed twice-weekly nonstop service between Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport and Shanghai Pudong on 28 September, with the first return flight touching down in Nepal on the morning of 29 September. The route had been suspended since early 2020 and its comeback is the first direct air link between the two cities since then. For global mobility teams the restoration is more than symbolic. Nepal hosts hundreds of Chinese infrastructure technicians under the Belt and Road Initiative, while Shanghainese manufacturers maintain project offices in Kathmandu for hydropower and telecoms roll-outs. Until now employees relied on time-consuming connections via Guangzhou or Kuala Lumpur; the nonstop sector cuts end-to-end travel time by at least three hours and eliminates visa-check hassles during transit. The airline will operate Airbus A320-200 aircraft on Mondays and Fridays outbound from Kathmandu, with Tuesday and Saturday returns from Shanghai. Introductory capacity is 324 seats per week in each direction, but management said frequencies could rise if average load factors exceed 70 % by year-end. Companies moving staff should monitor seat availability around China’s Canton Fair in November, when demand historically spikes. China currently grants 30-day visa-free entry to Nepali nationals traveling for tourism or business; conversely, Nepal offers Chinese citizens visas on arrival. Mobility managers should remind assignees that work or residence permits are still required for longer-term postings and that Chinese nationals entering Nepal for employment must secure a labour approval letter in advance. Travel industry observers expect the route to catalyse outbound leisure demand from Shanghai during Nepal’s peak trekking season. For corporate travel buyers the bigger win is improved schedule resilience: if Shanghai Pudong is disrupted, passengers can now re-route via Kunming–Kathmandu on China Eastern or via the reinstated Cathay Dragon Hong Kong connection, giving companies more options for duty-of-care routing.
