Lapland recruitment fair draws EU talent despite tighter Finnish labour market
Työmarkkinatori, Finland’s public employment portal, reported on 5 October that the annual “Work in Lapland – European Job Days” fair attracted 1,625 registrants from all 31 EURES countries, even though domestic applicants filled many winter-season jobs this year. The virtual event—held on 2 September but analysed in the new post—featured 14 tourism and hospitality employers advertising 121 vacancies across northern resorts such as Rovaniemi, Levi and Ylläs. Organisers said demand centred on multilingual staff, with French and German speakers topping the shortlist as travel operators target continental visitors. Employers conducted 20 online interviews during the three-day hiring window, down from 33 last year, reflecting Finland’s softer economy and a larger pool of local job-seekers after lay-offs in the retail sector. Nevertheless, Lapland remains dependent on foreign seasonal labour for peak December–March operations. Many candidates were couples moving north after summer stints in southern Europe, underscoring the circular-mobility pattern that EU free movement enables. Recruiters highlighted streamlined residence-permit processing for EU citizens but reminded non-EU applicants that Schengen short-stay rules cap work to 90 days unless a Finnish seasonal-work permit is secured. For travel companies, the figures suggest they should launch 2027 winter hiring earlier and widen marketing in Spain and Italy, where language-skilled candidates abound. Mobility advisers also recommend budgeting extra time for housing arrangements, as Lapland’s rental market is already tight. The tenth edition of Work in Lapland will take place next September, and organisers plan to pilot live video tours of resort towns to give candidates a clearer picture of living conditions above the Arctic Circle.
