São Paulo’s Airport Rail Link Partially Restored Ahead of Full Transfer to Private Operator
Business and leisure travellers using São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport finally received good news on 7 October 2026. The private concessionaire Trívia Trens reinstituted partial service on CPTM’s Line 13-Jade and its dedicated Expresso Aeroporto after a 75-day shutdown triggered by a power-supply failure and a train-car fire last July. During the emergency, the state-run rail company CPTM retook control of the line and imposed a 90-day remedial period that expires on 26 October. From now until that hand-over date, Trívia will run a “pre-operational transition”, maintaining current timetables and 20-minute headways while CPTM engineers audit the network in real time. If safety and punctuality targets are met, the private operator will assume full responsibility under an “operação assistida” model in which CPTM continues to monitor performance for another 30 days. A similar calendar has been set for Lines 11-Coral and 12-Safira, which also suffered July’s cascading failures. The gradual restart matters to mobility managers because Line 13-Jade is the only mass-transit option linking Brazil’s busiest airport to the business districts of Luz and Brás. During the suspension, travellers endured higher taxi fares, freeway congestion and missed flights. Airlines operating tight domestic connections from Guarulhos had to pad minimum connection times by up to 40 minutes, according to local GDS data. Trívia says it has invested R$ 120 million in new substations, fire-suppression equipment and driver re-certification. The São Paulo state transport regulator ARTESP will run independent stress tests before sign-off. Corporations with frequent-traveller agreements should monitor the 26 October milestone; any further slippage could force contingency ground-transport budgets back onto travel programmes. For now, passengers can again expect the 35-minute non-stop hop between Terminal 2 and downtown at the regular R$ 16.50 fare—welcome relief as Brazil heads into the year-end conference and holiday season.
