US Embassy Refuses Visas to Nine Indian Wrestlers Heading to U23 World Championships
India’s preparations for the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas took a hit on 7 October when nine of the 16 selected wrestlers were denied US visas at the embassy in New Delhi. Officials told the grapplers—many of whom are junior world medallists—that applications were refused because the athletes are “below 20 and unemployed”, sparking outrage at the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The tournament, scheduled for 12–18 October, is a critical qualifier for future elite events. Coaches fear that late approvals, even if secured on appeal, would leave little acclimatisation time. The WFI has written to United World Wrestling (UWW) and the US Embassy seeking an expedited review, arguing that athletes travel under a sports-specific B-1/B-2 waiver recognised by international federations. Visa denials for Indian sportspersons are not new, but the scale of this incident highlights persistent gaps in evidencing ‘strong ties’ for young, unemployed athletes. Sports-mobility consultants suggest teams submit centrally issued government guarantee letters and more robust financial undertakings to pre-empt consular doubts. For corporate sponsors and media rights-holders, India’s reduced representation could dent viewer interest and contractual deliverables. Travel managers supporting sports delegations should monitor the embassy’s response windows and consider alternative competition exposure if visas are not reversed. The episode also fuels broader debate on whether the US should create a streamlined athletic-events visa comparable to its P-type visas for performers, thereby avoiding subjective assessments of youth employment status.
