UAE Attorney-General Details Terror Plot Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073
The UAE Public Prosecution on 9 October released the first comprehensive findings from its investigation into the 30 September incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to Attorney-General Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, the Omani co-pilot attempted to seize the Boeing 737 by attacking the captain with an emergency axe, intending to crash the aircraft into Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport in a suicide mission inspired by 9/11. The plot was foiled when an off-duty pilot and cabin crew breached the cockpit door, subdued the assailant and diverted the aircraft to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where Saudi authorities took the suspect into custody. Forensic reports confirm the captain’s head injuries are consistent with axe blows, but no passengers were hurt. Investigators traced the 29-year-old suspect’s radicalisation to 2017 while studying in Australia; his employment history spans Oman Air, Royal Air Maroc and, since January 2026, Flydubai. Recruitment records show he held valid licences and background checks, exposing potential gaps in global pilot vetting protocols. Business-critical travel to Israel via Dubai has surged in recent years, and multinationals with regional mobility programmes are assessing new crew-screening assurances from UAE carriers. Flydubai says it has launched an immediate review of psychological assessment procedures and is accelerating installation of secondary cockpit barriers mandated by the GCAA. Security consultants advise companies to brief travellers on recognising in-flight anomalies and to register itineraries with corporate security teams. Insurers are also re-evaluating war-risk premiums for routes traversing conflict-adjacent airspace.
